The Green Globe Improved artichoke is a perennial heirloom variety with silvery-green leaves.

Here are some details about growing and caring for Green Globe artichoke plants:

  • Growing Season and Zones:

    • Green Globe artichokes thrive in USDA zones 8 to 11.
    • They require a long growing season, typically around 120 days.
    • In colder climates, you can start them indoors and grow them as annuals.
  • Plant Characteristics:

    • Height: Green Globe artichoke plants can grow up to 4 feet (1 meter) tall.
    • Flower Bud: The edible part of the artichoke plant is the flower bud.
    • Buds develop on tall stems from the center of the plant.
    • Each plant produces three to four buds, which are usually 2 to 5 inches (5-13 cm) in diameter.
    • If the artichoke bud is not harvested, it will open into an attractive purple thistle-like flower.
  • Planting and Care:

    • Starting Indoors: Begin by starting the seeds indoors between late January and early March.
      • Use a 3 or 4-inch (8-10 cm) planter with nutrient-rich soil.
      • Artichoke seeds are slow to germinate, so be patient.
      • Maintain warm temperatures (around 70-75°F or 21-24°C) and slightly moist soil for better germination.
      • Once sprouted, keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
    • Transplanting: When the seedlings are three to four weeks old, thin them out, leaving only one artichoke plant per pot.
      • Choose a sunny location with good drainage and fertile soil for transplanting.
      • Test the soil and amend it if necessary (pH between 6.5 to 7.5).
      • Space perennial artichoke plants at least 4 feet (1 meter) apart.
    • Care: Green Globe artichokes are heavy feeders.
      • Apply organic compost and a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
      • To overwinter in frost-prone areas, cut back the plants and protect the crowns with a thick layer of mulch or straw.
      • The Green Globe variety remains productive for five years or more.

Remember, not only are Green Globe artichokes nutritious, but their attractive appearance also makes them a great addition to your garden!
