Swiss Chard - Orange (seeds)
Orange chard, also known as Swiss chard, is a leafy green vegetable that is both highly nutritious and visually appealing.
Appearance and Flavor
Orange chard belongs to the same family as beets and spinach. Its large, glossy leaves have a slightly bitter taste. What makes rainbow chard truly captivating are its vibrant, rainbow-colored stems and veins. These colorful stalks range from pink and yellow to red and orange.
Rainbow Chard vs. Swiss Chard
Rainbow chard is not a distinct varietal; rather, it’s a combination of three chard varieties sold together:
- White-stemmed Swiss chard
- Red chard
- Golden chard
When these three power players come together, they create a delightful mix of flavors and colors. Rainbow chard boasts the same nutritional benefits as Swiss chard but adds a unique twist with its colorful stalks.
Cooking Tips
Always rinse both the leaves and stems thoroughly before cooking to remove any grit or dirt. Rainbow chard is excellent for sautéing or stir-frying. To even out cooking, remove the colored ribs/stems from the leaves and cook the stems first. Pair rainbow chard with sweet, tangy, or creamy ingredients to balance its mineral edge.
Keep in mind that when cooked, red chard in the mix will “bleed” red, adding a lovely pink hue to adjacent foods.
Whether you’re using it in salads, sautés, or other dishes, rainbow chard brings both visual appeal and nutrition to your table!
